Location

EDBT Summer School 2007 lectures will be held at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano was founded in 1997 as a free, state-recognized university. It incorporates the School of Economics and Management, the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Computer Science, and the Faculty of Design and Art. The main university building with the lecture rooms is located in the downtown area of Bolzano.

For student participants accommodation in double rooms in nearby hotels is included in the registration fees.

Bozen-Bolzano

The city's Italian-Austrian character, enhanced by the narrow cobblestone streets, Habsburg-era churches and pervasive bilingual signage give it the unique flavour of a city at crossroads between Italian and Austrian cultures. This, and its natural and cultural attractions make it a renowned tourist destination. Near Bozen-Bolzano there exist lots of possibilities for sports, for example hiking/climbing in the nearby Dolomites.

Among the major monuments and sights are: Walther Square, with a statue of the minstrel with the same name (Minnesänger in German); the South Tyrol Archeological Museum, which hosts the ice man; the Gothic Cathedral, started in 1184 , probably on the foundations of a Roman villa and rebuilt in the 14th Century by architects Martin and Peter Schiche (completed 1382); castles of Mareccio, Roncolo and Firmiano (among numerous others); the First WW Victory Monument, a controversial monument built by Mussolini in 1928; and the Messner Mountain Museum Firmiano.

Getting to Bozen-Bolzano

Bozen-Bolzano is on the main road between Austria/Germany and Italy and is accessible by train, car, bus or plane.

Bolzano has a small local airport. Airports with direct train connections to Bozen-Bolzano are Verona Villafranca, Innsbruck (Austria), and Munich (Germany). The airports of Milano, Venice, Bergamo, Treviso, and Bologna are also viable choices to get to Bolzano. From all these airports it is most convenient to get to Bozen-Bolzano by train. The train station of Bozen-Bolzano is in the city center and approximately 200 meters from the premises of the university.
