The KRiPad
Suggestions and discussions on how to better exploit an iPad (or iPhone) in the academic world.
Enrico
Hardware
- Adaptor VGA Apple (to use the iPad with a projector during conferences/presentations)
- Apple iPad Dock (several of those, to keep it while recharging)
- Apple Smart Cover (to protect it while in the backpack)
- Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover for iPad 3 (unmissable to work seriously)
- Rechargeable battery Gum Max Supercharged Just Mobile (to avoid risking while on the go)
- Wacom Bamboo Stylus iPad pen (really effective for note taking or drawing)
Software
Reading
- GoodReader (use it as the main document reader/editor; syncs with cloud services and svn; annotating PDF in a sophisticated and elegant way)
- Pocket (Read It Later) (to accumulate readings while offline or commuting or…; iPad/iPhone/Mac in sync)
- Reeder (the best RSS Reader Client; iPad/iPhone/Mac in sync)
- Google Chrome browser (alternative browser to access sites in desktop format; iPad/iPhone/Mac in sync)
Notes
GoodNotes - Write notes (the most sophisticated note taking app, using stylus, drawings, text, photos, annotating pdf/images, etc; syncs with cloud services)- MindNode (mindmapping app, simple, effective and elegant to structure notes; iPad/iPhone/Mac in sync)
2Do (GTD-style simple, effective and elegant management of to-do lists; iPad/iPhone/Mac in sync)
File Manager
- iRepoEditor (SVN manager, not very intuitive, but it is the best around so far)
- PDF Converter (to convert arbitrary docs in PDF, to use with GoodReader)
- Scanner Pro (scan documents/whiteboards via the camera)
Writing
- Pages, Keynote, Numbers from Apple (the office apps from Apple; iPad/iPhone/Mac in sync)
- Textastic (text editor with syntax coloring, LaTeX, etc; syncs with cloud services and svn)
LaTeX
Texpad (LaTeX: edit and compile locally or remotely)
TeX Writer (LaTeX: edit and compile locally or remotely)- TeX Equation (typesets math equations/formulas with built-in TeX engine)
- DeTeXify (draw a symbol on the iPad and get all the LaTeX symbols close to it)
- AutomaTeX (a daemon which LaTeXs automatically the .tex files in a designated DropBox/WebDAV folder in a Mac)
Reference Managers
I'm still evaluating, it is not clear which should be the best, they have different strengths.
SQL
- PostgreSQL Database client (better than some Mac counterpart…)
Presentation
- 2Screens - Presentation Expert (presentation manager with integrated whiteboard, pointer, timer, etc)
- 2Screens Remote (iPhone app acting as a remote for 2Screens)
- Presentation Clock (when you are the session chair…)
- Air Sketch (turn your iPad into a wireless whiteboard and PDF annotator: anybody with a HTML5 browser in the local network can follow the presentation)
- Doceri Remote (turn your iPad into a controller of your mac/windows desktop - connected to a projector - superimposing a whiteboard with a pointer)
AirServer (An AirPlay receiver for Mac and Windows: can stream content or mirror the display from an iPad/iPhone/Mac)- Air Display (turns your iPad into a wireless display, to extend the mac/windows screen)
Classroom
TeacherPal (enables the teacher to organize classes, to track the attendance, grades and behavior of students)
Draw
iDraw (the most feature-packed vector drawing app)
Grafio (graph drawing app)
SketchBook Express (drawing app)
Traveling
- TripIt travel organiser (iPad/iPhone/Mac in sync)
- SkyScanner (best flight planner)
- trivago (best hotel booking via comparison)
- Wi-Fi Finder (to find wifi hotspots around the world even when offline)
Utilities
- 1Password Pro (password manager; iPad/iPhone/Mac in sync)
- PocketCloud (remote access to Macs; iPad/iPhone/Mac in sync)
