The KRiPad

Suggestions and discussions on how to better exploit an iPad (or iPhone) in the academic world.

Enrico

Hardware

  • Adaptor VGA Apple (to use the iPad with a projector during conferences/presentations)
  • Apple iPad Dock (several of those, to keep it while recharging)
  • Smart Cover (to protect it while in the backpack)
  • Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover for iPad 3 (unmissable to work seriously)
  • Rechargeable battery Gum Max Supercharged Just Mobile (to avoid risking while on the go)
  • Wacom Bamboo Stylus iPad pens (really effective for note taking or drawing)

Software

Reading

  • Pocket (Read It Later) (to accumulate readings while offline or commuting or…; iPad/iPhone/Mac in sync)
  • Reeder (the best Google Reader Client; iPad/iPhone/Mac in sync)
  • Google Chrome browser (alternative browser to access sites in desktop format; iPad/iPhone/Mac in sync)

Notes

  • Remarks - Write notes (the most sophisticated note taking app, using stylus, drawings, text, voice recordings, annotating pdf/images, etc; syncs with cloud services)
  • Simplenote (simple text-based note taking app; iPad/iPhone/Mac in sync)
  • MindNode (mindmapping app, simple, effective and elegant to structure notes; iPad/iPhone/Mac in sync)
  • ToDo (GTD-style simple, effective and elegant management of to-do lists; iPad/iPhone/Mac in sync)

File Manager

  • ReaddleDocs (essential file manager; syncs automatically with cloud services and svn)
  • SVN manager (not very intuitive, but it is the best around so far)
  • PDF Converter (to convert arbitrary docs in PDF, to use with PDF Expert)
  • Scanner Pro (scan documents/whiteboards via the camera)

PDF & Writing

  • Pages, Keynote, Numbers from Apple (the office apps from Apple; iPad/iPhone/Mac in sync)
  • PDF Expert (annotating PDF in a sophisticated but elegant way; I use it also as my main document reader; syncs with cloud services and svn)
  • Textastic (text editor with syntax coloring, LaTeX, etc; syncs with cloud services and svn)

LaTeX

  • DeTeXify (draw a symbol on the iPad and get all the LaTeX symbols close to it)
  • LaTeX assistant (reference for most of the LaTeX symbols)
  • LaTeXmk for DropBox (a daemon which LaTeXs automatically the .tex files in a designated DropBox folder in a Mac)

Reference Managers

I'm still evaluating, it is not clear which should be the best, they have different strengths.

SQL

Presentation

  • 2Screens - Presentation Expert (presentation manager with integrated whiteboard, pointer, timer, etc)
  • Air Sketch (turn your iPad into a wireless whiteboard and PDF annotator: anybody with a HTML5 browser in the local network can see the presentation)
  • Presentation Clock (when you are the session chair…)
