Big Guns, Bartoli's Boys, and Other Bad Guys Tomb Raider II is definitely a huge step up from the original game in terms of new weapons and bad guys. We'll admit that this makes TRII less lonely and more action-oriented than the original game. But to say this significantly alters gameplay is a tad misleading. A sampling of enemies include Rats, Ravens, Eagles, Tigers, Leopards, Sharks, Eels, Spiders, Bartoli's Henchmen (who come in many flavors), Tibetan Monks, Palace Guards, and a pair of semi-vile Bosses. We could detail all of them here, and reveal the weapons that kill them best, but we won't. Here's why: Despite their respective good looks, shapes, tattoos, and natural abilities, killing any individual enemy doesn't require a lot of innovation - or a wide variety of firepower. This was perhaps our most disappointing discovery, and proof that this is a puzzle game first and a shooter second. Underwater combat excluded, we found that our basic pistols did the job quite nicely in most every situation. In fact, we only used the bigger caliber guns when we wanted to dispatch the baddies quickly - namely the shotgun for close encounters, and the M-16, auto-pistols, or Uzis at a distance - thus allowing us to stockpile valuable medi packs. Secrets Secrets in Tomb Raider II come in the form of hidden dragon statuettes - three per level. Unlike other action games, these secrets don't imbued Lara with magical powers or increase her natural abilities; nor do they provide access to any secret levels (the game doesn't have any). According to the game's producers, the secrets merely provide you with extra ammo, that is if you collect all three. We show you where to find each one - and provide tips for getting your hands on each prize. Let's go. Adventure, and the Dagger, await. First stop: The Great Wall |
