Diego Calvanese is a full professor at the Research Centre for Knowledge and Data (KRDB), Faculty of Engineering, Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (unibz), Italy. Since November 2019, he is also a Wallenberg Guest Professor at the Department of Computing Science, Umeå University (Sweden). Since 2017, he is the Director of Smart Data Factory, the technology transfer lab of the Faculty of Computer Science at unibz. He received a Ph.D. from Sapienza Università di Roma in 1996. His research interests include knowledge representation and reasoning, virtual knowledge graphs for data access and integration, description logics, Semantic Web, graph data, and data-aware processes modeling and verification. He has been involved in many research projects in the above areas (including FP6 TONES, FP7 ACSI, FP7 Optique, H2020 INODE, HEU CyclOps), acquiring funding for more than Euro 6M Euro. He has authored more than 400 refereed publications, many in the most prestigious international journals and conferences in AI and Databases, with more than 37000 citations and an h-index of 78, according to Google Scholar. He is an editor of the Description Logic Handbook. He has served in more than 150 organization and program committee roles for international events, and he is/has been an associate editor of AIJ, JAIR, and on the editorial board of JAR. He has been the PC chair of the 34th ACM Symposium on Principles of Database Systems (PODS 2015), the general chair of the 28th and 32nd European Summer School in Logic, Language and Information (ESSLLI 2016, 2021), a PC co-chair of the 17th International Conferences on Principles of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KR 2020), and he will be the PC chair of the 35th International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI-ECAI 2026). In 2012-2013 he has been a visiting researcher at TU Vienna as Pauli Fellow of the "Wolfgang Pauli Institute". He is the originator and a co-founder of the startup Ontopic, which delivers solutions and services for the management of virtual knowledge graphs.
