MIVaS: (2007-2008) MIVaS (Metodi Inferenziali per la Valutazione di Sistema -- Inferential Methods for the Evaluation of the School System) was started at the beginning of 2007 by the Evaluation Committee of the Italian-language schools of the Autonomous Province of Bozen-Bolzano. The aim of the committee is a diachronic research (1966-2006) about the linguistic skills and the evolution of contextual culture of the students exiting the 3rd grade of the Lower Junior High School (equivalent to other countries' 8th grade of Lower Junior High School or Middle School). The targets of this analysis are the written compositions of students and the respective evaluations expressed by examiners. We consider the written exams of these subjects: Italian, German as second language, English, and Mathematics. Furthermore all documents which turn out to be useful in identifying the contextual culture are examined. The aim is to build the premises for a systemic evaluation which carefully monitors the ongoing changes of social and scholastic behaviors, focusing on the "natural" outcomes of schools along with meaningful documents of teaching activities and of the contextual factors deriving from social life.

Natural Language Generation Applied to Intelligent Query Interfaces: (2006-) The present research aims at building a bridge between Intelligent Query Interfaces and Natural Language Generation technologies. The idea is to have a query interface enabling the users to access heterogeneous data sources by means of an integrated ontology. The query interface supports the users in formulating a precise conjunctive query where the intelligence of the interface is driven by an ontology describing the domain of the data in the information system. The main challenge is that the underlying conjunctive query must be presented to the user in natural language and the stepwise refinements of the query made by the user are refinements that maintain the grammaticality of the sentences representing the query. This can be considered a step towards a question answering system where the question is not freely inserted by the user, but instead the user is guided in building it according to the knowledge domain chosen.

SEWASIE: (2003-2005) The goal of the SEWASIE (SEmantic Webs and AgentS in Integrated Economies) project is the design and the implementation of an advanced search engine allowing information access via a machine-processable semantics of data in order to provide the basis of structured web-based communication. MIRIS: (2000-2003) The aim of the MIRIS (Minority Rights Information System) project is to develop a comprehensive information system which provides easily accessible information on the implementation of minority rights in Europe. MIRIS will include the most important legal texts including the EU Framework Convention for the protection of minority rights, state reports, the national legislation and the case-law, reports compiled by minority groups, experts' opinions, international treaties, etc.

CATEx: (1998-2000) The CATEx (Computer Assisted Terminology Extraction) project of EURAC.Research emerged from the need to support and improve the manual acquisition of terminological data. The main objective of the project was to develop a computational framework for (semi-)automatic terminology acquisition, which was composed of the following modules: a parallel text corpus, term-extraction tools, and a term database. Our corpus contained Italian and German legal documents (approx. 5 million words), which have been encoded in XML according to the Corpus Encoding Standard. The following pieces of information have been annotated: bibliographic information, structural information, sentences and tokens, lemmas, part-of-speech tags, and alignment at the sentence level. With the large number of approx. 100,000 one-to-one sentence alignments the corpus served also as a useful reference tool for the evaluation of alignment algorithms. The CATEx bilingual corpus is being used now by the BISTRO project.
